An artist's gift keeps on giving

"I’ve got a guy with a gun. 

Get that baby in!" he recalled saying.

He ran into the hospital with a family and their baby. The child was septic, sick with an infection, and if it didn’t get to the hospital it wouldn’t live another day. The three-hour drive to the capital city was a heart-wrenching race to get there in time.

Several times the baby stopped breathing, and the group would listen and soon a ragged cough would rack its body.

As they rushed into the hospital, there was the typical bureaucracy that is ever apparent in the Honduran healthcare system. The receptionist wouldn’t let them in. Tom Babineau grabbed the armed guard who accompanied them and to get the attention of the staff.

“I’ve got a guy with a gun. Get that baby in!” he recalled saying.

When he returned to Honduras this fall, one year later, he met the 16-month-old baby whose life he helped to save while helping a dental and medical volunteer trip.

“There is no doubt that that child would have died had we not been there,” Babineau said.
